Bernhard obtained a B.A. in International Relations at the School for International Studies/ University of Dresden in Germany and at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. He also holds a M.A. in International Studies – with a specialisation in International History and Politics – from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. He is currently a Ph.D. student at the Graduate Institute.

His interests lie in the fields of German foreign politics, the German Question, and transatlantic relations since World War II. His Ph.D. project deals with the diplomatic reactions of the West German government to international terrorism in the 1970s.
